A recent survey indicated that two out of three dentists are in favor of dentists being allowed to offer Botox and dermal fillers.\u00a0 A few of those think Botox should only be offered by dentists for therapeutic dental purposes, such as TMJ, while most of them believe dentists should be allowed to administer Botox for both therapeutic and cosmetic purposes involving the head and neck.<\/p>\n
One dentist summed up the position by pointing out that no other profession is so well-versed in the anatomy of the human head and neck.\u00a0 Other dentists echo this sentiment and also point out that dentists are specifically trained to administer injections in many of the same general areas where Botox is administered and that dentists tend to know more about the nerves in the face than most other doctors, except maybe plastic surgeons.\u00a0 Indeed, some dentists already offer a number of cosmetic dental procedures, The right use of Botox or dermal fillers can augment the results of other procedures.<\/p>\n
In some states many medical professionals other than doctors, including physicians assistants and estheticians, are allowed to administer Botox and dermal fillers with proper training.\u00a0 Because of the frequency with which dentists administer injections of anesthesia to patients who are already in pain, dentists may be more adept at gently administering other types of injections so that pain is minimized. An intimate familiarity with the anatomy of the face is also a natural advantage.<\/p>\n
There are those who disagree and believe only certain specialists should offer Botox, or that dentists should only be allowed to use Botox for therapeutic purposes, such as TMJ or bruxism.\u00a0 These dissenters are in the distinct minority among dental professionals.<\/p>\n
Currently less than 10% of dentists are trained in the use of Botox, though this number is growing.\u00a0 As more dentists offer Botox, more therapeutic uses are being discovered.\u00a0 Many patients with TMJ, bruxism or general facial pain have been through a variety of treatments and seen little relief.\u00a0 Botox could well be the answer for many of these patients.\u00a0 It can also be useful in helping patients who have recently been fitted for dentures become accustomed to them, especially those patients who have been without teeth for some time.<\/p>\n
Even cosmetic uses for Botox aren\u2019t limited to erasing wrinkles, though erasing wrinkles around the mouth and nose can by the best way to round out cosmetic dentistry to create a perfect smile.\u00a0 When there is excessive muscle tension around the mouth, all the work done by braces and retainers can go down the drain over time.\u00a0 Botox can be used in conjunction with orthodontic treatments to help retrain the muscles to help keep the teeth straight.<\/p>\n
