Can Underarm Botox Injections Reduce Sweating?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is incredibly effective at preventing underarm sweat.

By temporarily inhibiting the chemicals that stimulate glands to create sweat, Botox (or botulinum toxin) is an excellent treatment for underarm sweating.

When your body temperature rises or you’re under a lot of mental pressure, you sweat. Do you feel sweaty and sticky under your arms before job interviews? Do you appear completely soaked while holding a plank in a hot yoga studio?

Botox® injections for underarm sweating should be considered if you perspire for no apparent cause despite using both over-the-counter and prescription antiperspirants.

Botox Injections under Arms

The injectable medicine known as Botox, or botulinum toxin, is most well-known for its ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. However, it also works wonderfully to stop underarm sweat. It reduces underarm sweat by 82–87%. The average duration of dryness is three to twelve months.

Additionally, there is a reduction in perspiration and body odor. Bacteria that like being warm and damp are responsible for that sweaty armpit odor. If you get rid of the moisture, the smell will be gone, too.

Botox does not eliminate the need for deodorant or antiperspirant. Injections of Botox can be used to treat hyperhidrosis and lead to a dramatic decrease in sweating. Due to occasional light perspiration, most people will still need to use deodorant or antiperspirant. But that’s not similar for every person.

The FDA has approved Botox for use in treating hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating). Additionally, it is used to treat hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating in other body parts.

However, the following locations carry a higher risk of adverse effects and might be more painful to treat with Botox:

  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Under the breasts
  • Head
  • Face

The Use of Botox to Lessen Sweating

Botox temporarily blocks the chemicals that signal your glands to produce sweat. It has no impact on touch or sensibility in the underarm region.

If you suffer from excessive underarm perspiration, Botox can help with only one appointment visit. Typically, 25 injections are placed in each armpit during the treatment. At each appointment, your medical professional will use a very fine needle to inject a very small amount of Botox just below the surface of your skin.

The reduction in sweating should become noticeable in three to four days. The full benefits of reducing excess moisture take effect after about two weeks.

Do Botox injections have any negative effects?

Sweating is nature’s way of cooling you down. Does blocking sweat glands with Botox prevent you from cooling down? The answer is obviously ‘no’ because only a tiny fraction of your total sweat glands are actually located in your body. You can find 2% of them in your armpits. The ability of your body to cool itself will not be compromised if you reduce perspiration in a few localized regions.

People sometimes worry that if they try to reduce perspiration in one area, it will increase sweat in other parts. But that doesn’t occur either.

Botox injections in the armpits have almost no adverse effects other than the inconvenience associated with the injections themselves. The most prevalent adverse effect is muscle weakness, which primarily affects the palms.

Where can I obtain the injections without worrying about my safety?

Only medical professionals who have undergone extensive training and certification should administer Botox injections. The best people to go to are those who are experts in using Botox to treat both wrinkles and excessive sweating. The best choice would be trained medical professionals who are already familiar with the treatment and its outcomes.

People with particular medications or conditions like myasthenia gravis are typically not candidates for Botox, and a trained medical professional will know who these people are.
